alleviate the discomfort of larger breasts
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) is a surgical procedure in which a patient undergoes the removal of excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a desired breast size and loft (often which is more proportionate to the body). Breast reduction can alleviate the common discomfort that is associated with larger breasts.
Patients who undergo reduction mammaplasty are able to enjoy an improved quality of life thanks to its many benefits. The procedure can alleviate a number of issues:
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Shoulder pain
- Posture issues
- Rashes beneath the breasts
- Painful bra-strap indentations

what to expect
good candidates
The best candidates for a breast reduction are patients experiencing emotional, social, and/or physical issues as a result of oversized breasts. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
During the Procedure
At the start of breast reduction surgery, general anesthesia is administered to the patient in order to make the procedure comfortable and pain-free.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, incisions are made. These incisions have been carefully chosen in advance according to the patient’s needs and goals.
After the chosen incision has been created, excess fat, skin, and glandular breast tissues are removed to reduce the volume of the breasts. The areolae are repositioned and resized as needed to fit the breasts’ new dimensions. Finally, the incisions are closed with the help of surgical sutures.
After the Procedure
Following breast reduction surgery dressings and bandages will be used around the surgical area. Bruising and swelling will be present in the surgical area but will reduce over time with the help of ice packs. A support bra can be used daily to keep swelling down, and to support the breasts as they heal.
Your surgeon may recommend limited physical activity for a few days to a few weeks. During recovery, it will be important to follow your surgeon’s post-surgical care directions very closely in order to avoid complications. After the recovery phase, you will be able to enjoy your new, improved body!
incision options
The following incision options are available:
- Donut Incision – Suitable for a smaller degree of reduction. Two concentric circle incisions are made around the areola.
- Lollipop Incision – Suitable for a moderate degree of reduction. A circle incision is made around the areola, and a vertical incision is made down from it to the breast fold.
- Anchor Incision – Suitable for a larger degree of reduction. A lollipop incision is created, and then a curving horizontal incision is made across the breast fold.
Cost of Breast Reduction in Dallas
The cost of breast reduction surgery depends on the extent of tissue removal, the incision technique used, anesthesia fees, and facility costs. A personalized estimate is provided during your consultation.
In some cases, breast reduction may qualify for insurance coverage when the procedure is performed to address documented physical symptoms such as back pain, shoulder pain, or chronic skin irritation. The team at the American Institute for Plastic Surgery can help clarify your coverage options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will breast reduction leave scars?
All breast reduction techniques involve incisions, which result in some degree of scarring. Incision placement — whether donut, lollipop, or anchor — is determined by the amount of reduction needed. Scars fade significantly over time with proper care and are typically positioned to minimize visibility.
What is recovery like after breast reduction?
Most patients return to light activity within one to two weeks. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for four to six weeks. Swelling and soreness are expected in the first few weeks and resolve gradually over several months.
Can breast reduction relieve back and shoulder pain?
Yes. Breast Reduction is one of the most functional cosmetic procedures performed. Most patients report meaningful relief from neck, back, and shoulder pain, as well as improvement in posture and skin irritation beneath the breasts.
Does breast reduction affect breastfeeding?
Breast reduction may affect the ability to breastfeed, as some procedures involve repositioning or altering breast tissue and ducts. Patients who plan to breastfeed in the future should discuss this with their surgeon during consultation so the most appropriate technique can be selected.
How long do breast reduction results last?
Results from breast reduction surgery are long-lasting. Significant weight gain or pregnancy after surgery can alter the outcome, so maintaining a stable weight helps preserve results over time.
