Breast Implant Placement: Sub Muscular vs Subglandular

Breast Implant PlacementAfter the incision choice is made the next decision is the pocket location for the implant. The choice really is a continuum of either under the muscle or under the breast or some combination of the two. The majority of implants are placed mostly under the pectoralis major with the lower part being partially under the breast. This gives you the best of both placements. The breast shape is more natural with a slope to the upper breast and more upper pole fullness from the muscle and a natural curve to the lower breast.

Other Options for Breast Implant Placement: Shapes & Textures

Implants come smooth or with a textured surface. At the Institute we feel that smooth implants have fewer complications and tend to last longer. We also prefer to use round implants instead of shaped implants. Shaped implants have a much higher failure rate and do not add anything to the results. Implants are available in different profiles to fit different shape breasts and chest walls. The most common implant is a high profile silicone filled implant. The means the implant projection forward the most and is not too wide for the chest.
