Gynecomastia: Is It Right for You?

Some men work out to achieve the ideal body. In some cases, however, men cannot achieve a defined, muscular chest naturally. Genetics certainly plays a role in determining body shape and mass, and gynecomastia is no exception. Gynecomastia is the medical term for abnormal breast development in men–but the term has also come to popularly refer to men who suffer from fatty deposits in the chest area.  Remember, it’s a condition that can be treated.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

Here at the American Institute for Plastic Surgery, we offer a quick, simple, and nearly permanent solution to gynecomastia. Mild gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction only, using laser or ultrasonic assistance.  More severe cases may need a combination of direct excision of the firm gland tissue and liposuction shaping of the chest.  Our generally recommended surgical treatment for very severe cases of gynecomastia with excess skin is a combination of liposuction for contouring the chest area, direct excision of the gland,  and some excision of skin for total correction of the area.  Your specific course of treatment will be determined by you and your surgeon following a consultation and examination.

Recovering From Gynecomastia Surgery

Your surgeon will give you instructions on how to recover from surgery. You will need to avoid some more strenuous activities for a few days. Your surgeon will certainly give instructions  regarding exercise following gynecomastia surgery. Following your treatment, you will be asked to wear a compression vest and gauze dressings on the chest area. Pressure helps your skin heal in good postion and adhere to underlying tissues. The gauze also keeps the area clean and dry.  Your surgery at the American Institute of Plastic Surgery includes follow-up visits; these follow up visits ensure the safest, most effective result for your surgery.
