Beauty for Life: Most Popular Surgeries for Men
According to most sources, the most popular plastic surgery procedures that men undergo these days are:
-
Gynecomastia
-
Blepharoplasty
The order of popularity of these procedures varies from practice to practice, but we thought we would provide some basic information on each in a four-part series. First up: gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a medical term which refers to the abnormal breast development in men; essentially, it is a condition in which men develop excessive fatty deposits in the chest region. Genetics plays a role in determining body shape and mass, and gynecomastia is no exception. Although the enlarged breast tissue in men with gynecomastia is benign, it can often become a source of distress. For those suffering from gynecomastia, it is nearly impossible to achieve a defined, muscular chest naturally. However, this is a treatable condition.
Gynecomastia Treatment Options
Mild forms of gynecomastia can be treated with liposuction using either laser or ultrasonic assistance. More severe cases of gynecomastia may require a combination of a direct excision of the firm gland tissue coupled with liposuction. In extremely severe cases, we often recommend a combination of liposuction (for contouring), the direct excision of gland tissue, and the excision of skin for total correction. The specific course of treatment will be determined by both you and your surgeon following a consultation and exam.
The Recovery Process
For a few days after surgery, you should avoid strenuous activities. Following the procedure, you will likely be asked to wear a compression vest and gauze dressings on the chest area. The pressure applied by the compression vest helps the skin to heal properly by adhering the skin to underlying tissues. The gauze is used to keep the treatment area clean and dry. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to ensure the safest, most effective results. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding your recovery process.
