What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Did you know that you can improve your appearance as well as your vision with eyelid surgery? People of all ages can have problems with the aging eye area. The upper eyes become heavy and the lower eyes develop bags and dark circles, leaving a hollow/sunken appearance. Drooping eyelids, sagging skin, and undereye bags are problems you may face when you start to age.

Many people continue to live with these problems, even when they affect their peripheral vision. Eyelid surgery can be useful to correct these issues.

Blepharoplasty can involve the following options:

  • Upper eyelid surgery: The treatment is best suited to reduce the appearance of heavy and sagging upper eyelid skin that results in decreased peripheral vision or cosmetic concerns.
  • Lower eyelid surgery: The treatment is best suited to reduce puffiness, sagging, and bags beneath the eyes.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

Are you wondering if eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty or an eye lift) is the right treatment for you? Some of the attributes of a good candidate for this procedure include the following:

  • You do not have any preexisting life-threatening medical conditions or illnesses that can impair healing after your surgery.
  • You are a non-smoker or are willing to quit smoking before the procedure.
  • You have a positive attitude towards life and realistic expectations for the procedure.

You will need to consult with your surgeon to determine whether you are a suitable candidate based on your present health condition, medical history, medications, allergies, and family medical history.

Eyelid Surgery: The Procedure

Incisions are typically made in the creases of your upper eyelids and just below the lashes of your lower eyelids, making scars virtually invisible. After the underlying fat and excess skin are removed from the upper lids, the incisions are closed with fine sutures designed to leave nearly invisible scars.

Dr. Harris, Dr. Dulin, and Dr. Raphael also combine a tightening of the lower eyelid muscle to give additional improvement to the sunken appearance of the lower eyes. Eyelid surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours and is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Stitches are removed in about one week and you can return to work in 7-10 days with make-up to help camouflage any residual bruising that may persist.

In addition to or in conjunction with eyelid surgery, fine lines and light wrinkles around the eyes can be improved with the CO2 laser procedure. This is a type of skin resurfacing treatment that eliminates dead and damaged skin cells, stimulating the skin’s healing process. New collagen and elastin protein is produced as a result of this, causing wrinkles like crow’s feet to be smoothed away.

Eyelid Lift Recovery

Once eyelid surgery is complete, patients must get a ride home with a friend or a family member, since they will not be able to drive for a time. They will then begin the recovery and healing process.

This process will involve making sure the eyes are moisturized properly, since they will be more prone to drying out. Using prescription eyedrops or artificial tears is recommended.

During recovery, it will be necessary to wear sunglasses in order to protect from heat, wind, and pollution. Sun exposure should be avoided, and sunblock should be worn.

There will be a degree of swelling and bruising in the region, but these issues will fade shortly as the tissues heal.
